Mission Statement

Sonshine Haven strives to instill the value of community involvement, Godly character and sustainable life skills to children, especially those at risk.

Our Founder

Sonshine Haven was founded by Mari Rothman (1947-2019) in 1991, as a result of hearing about the great need of students in our community.  She started with personal grooming classes (Life Skills) with six student for six weeks.  The following year she started a Bible club after school.  Each year she brought in more volunteers and opened more clubs.

Mari's legacy continues with Sonshine Clubs, Higher Ground Clubs, Life Skills, and meeting the physical needs of families at Thanksgiving, Christmas and throughout the year.

Our Executive Director

Dora Breuninger and her husband Tim have been married for 37+ years. They have 4 adult children including twin girls; they also have 9 grandchildren, 7 boys and 2 girls. She attended and graduated from Christian Heritage College (now San Diego Christian College) with a degree in Elementary Education.  Dora and her family moved from San Diego to El Cajon in 2000. It was then that she heard about Sonshine Clubs and the ministry to the families of the club kids. While caregiving for her grandmother, raising 4 kids, homeschooling one year, shopping, cooking and cleaning for a household of 9, she volunteered weekly at Chase Avenue’s Sonshine Club from 2000-2007. It was during this season that she realized this was a ministry she could use her gifts and abilities as a teacher as well as using her understanding and love of the Bible.

Mari asked Dora 3 times to be on staff. It was in 2007 that the time was right for Dora to go back to work.

Dora was hired in 2007 as a Club Coordinator, then in 2015 became the Program Director for Sonshine Haven and became the Executive Director in March of 2019.
